Sylvia Stave Vase

PEWTER AMPHORA VASE, attributed to Sylvia Stave for C.G. Hallberg, Stockholm, dated 1936, the hand-finished cast pewter rising from a stepped circular foot through a full-bodied amphora silhouette to a flared neck, the shoulder fitted with two S-curved handles applied by hand, the surface retaining the soft matte patina characteristic of unpolished period pewter. The proportions follow the disciplined classical vocabulary Stave developed during her tenure as artistic director at Hallberg, the amphora drawn directly from antique precedent and recast in the austere geometry of Swedish Grace.

Good condition consistent with age and use. Please note that there are surface bumps and light oxidation characteristic of the alloy; no repairs, losses or later additions. Height 21.5 cm (8 ½ inches); diameter at the body approximately 13 cm (5 ⅛ inches).

The underside struck with the C.G. Hallberg crowned CGH monogram and the date code K8 corresponding to the year 1936.

Sylvia Stave (Stockholm, 1908 - Paris, 1994) was appointed artistic director at C.G. Hallberg in 1931, at the age of twenty-three, and held the position until her departure from Sweden in 1939. Over eight years she designed the greater part of Hallberg's silver and pewter production and established one of the most disciplined voices in Swedish interwar metalwork, her practice belonging to the broader movement of women designers whose contribution to twentieth-century European decorative arts is only comparatively recently being reassessed. Pieces of the 1931-1939 Hallberg period that conform to her documented vocabulary but bear no individual designer signature are routinely catalogued "attributed to Sylvia Stave".
